The name ARK from:

Has now been changed to the spelling ARC.
The ARC Spire is the generator and source of all the city’s power. As the world is a product of Leon’s mind, the spire is best to be thought of as a visual representation of Leon’s brain and the city being the life it must sustain.
The Spire draws its energy source from the canyon below (Leon’s deepest level of subconscious)
The ARC-Ship that later in the novel/game resides above the Spire is the key to Leon waking up.
Maria’s original motive is to get close enough to Leon so she can corrupt his world (mind) enough that he questions his perception of reality and wakes up. The ARC-ship is best thought of as Leon’s Highest Level of consciousness. This must be reached for him to awaken, but will only appear once his mind starts to realise the truth. Everything Maria does, revolves around reaching this goal.

Silvia is a friend that Leon’s mind sort to create as it grew and developed such needs. Leon first met Silvia when he started working for the architectural company BRIDGE. Over the years prior to the novel/game Silvia and Leon developed a close relationship that borders on the lines of love interest.
Over the progression of the Novel/game Silvia’s purpose is to develop a mild love triangle between herself, Leon and Maria and be pushed away.
As a Narrative devise Silvia is a tool, used to signify drastic changes in Leon’s level of consciousness.
Character Bio:
Silvia is a very down to earth individual, she says what she thinks and does what she feels is best, regardless of the consequences. This is both an asset and a liability to herself and the people around her. She is a strong willed but physically delicate person who cares a lot for Leon. Others often misjudge her feminine prowess, as her appearance is more sexual than her personality. In other words, Silvia tends to reserve that which she flaunts for Leon.
